Wednesday, July 30, 2014, 1 p.m. — Kicking off her “Road to Fancy Farm” bus tour, Democratic senate candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes made her first stop Wednesday morning at the Old Talbott Tavern in Bardstown. In an event that took on an air and energy of an old-time camp meeting, Grimes’ remarks repeatedly brought enthusiastic, cheering supporters to their feet.
Introduced by state representative candidate Audrey Haydon, Grimes received a standing ovation welcome from the crowd. She wasted no time launching broadsides at her Republican opponent, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, calling him out of touch and deaf to the real needs of Kentuckians.
She told the crowd her candidacy represents Kentucky’s opportunity to break the gridlock in Washington, which she pinned on Republicans and McConnell. She called for Democratic women to go to the polls and vote in November. “When women vote, women win!” she said, pointing to longtime county chairwoman Margie Bradford, whom she addressed as “Mama Bradford.”
In remarks to supporters, Grimes detailed the differences she would make as a Kentucky’s U.S. Senator, and while the latest polls show the race is still a dead-heat, she said the Democratic grassroots support will push her campaign to victory in November.
Despite a late arrival, Grimes stayed to meet supporters and provide comments to media, which included national media following her campaign.
Grimes and her opponent, Sen. Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, will speak at the annual Fancy Farm picnic on Saturday. The political speaking will be broadcast live at 3 p.m. Saturday on WBRT.
