Obituary: Norbert Daniel ‘Coach’ Hummel Jr., 86
NORBERT DANIEL “COACH” HUMMEL JR.
Norbert Daniel “Coach” Hummel Jr., 86, died Wednesday, March 15, 2017, at Nazareth Home. He was born March 29, 1930, in Louisville. He was a former teacher and football and baseball coach and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He attended St. Benedict grade school, Flaget High School and St. Joseph College at Rensselaer. He earned a master’s degree in History and Education from Indiana University. He taught at Flaget, Male, Central, Shawnee, Seneca and Bishop David schools. He also operated a longstanding Christmas tree lot and was an avid gardener.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Norbert Daniel Hummel Sr. and Margaret Maloney Hummel; four sisters, Sr. Mary Jane Hummel SL, Sr. Margaret Ann Hummel SL, Rose Marie Thomas (Rudy) and Sr. Ellen Hummel MMS; and one sister-in-law, Martha Bickett.
Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jane Carroll Bickett Hummel; four daughters, Ann Hummel, Ellen Grisanti (Dominic), Mary Boone (Joseph), and Sarah Corrigan (Dan); four sons, Norbert Hummel III (Penny), David Hummel (Janice), John Hummel (Tina), and Joe Hummel (Jennifer); one sister, Sr. Patricia Hummel SL; and 16 grandchildren, Bert Hummel, Katie Grisanti, Kelly Hummel, Maggie Grisanti, Natalie Hummel, Nicholas Hummel, Emily Hummel, Matthew Hummel, Julianne Hummel, Hannah Boone, David Hummel, Jack Hummel, Ellie Hummel, Daniel Hummel, Caroline Hummel and Charlie Hummel. We are grateful to the staff of Nazareth Home for their loving care.
The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18, 2017, at Saint Edward Catholic Church, 9608 Sue Helen Drive, Louisville, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2017, at Ratterman & Sons Funeral Home, 10600 Taylorsville Road Jeffersontown, KY 40299
