Monday, June 5, 2017, 8:15 a.m. (Updated 9:48 a.m.) — The Kentucky State Police say the man who led police on a two-hour police chase that began in Louisville and ended early Monday morning in Bardstown is dead.

WDRB reports that the man was shot and killed by police as he tried to flee from his disabled vehicle along Springfield Road.

During the chase, the man fired shots at Louisville Metro Police officers, and rammed two police cruisers. When the chase was in Nelson County, deputies with the sheriff’s office used spike strips to stop the car. The man exited the vehicle and ran into the woods. He exchanged gunfire with officers and was shot by police. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.

No officers were injured in the incident. The suspect’s identity has not been released.

Springfield Road is expected to be closed for most of the day while police continue their investigation.

Louisville police say the chase began at about 1:30 a.m. after an attempted traffic stop in the southbound lanes of Interstate 65 where a suspect fired shots at police. The suspect fled at high-speeds through Jefferson, Bullitt and into Nelson counties. Several police agencies, including the Kentucky State Police, joined the pursuit.

This story will be updated as new details become available.
