‘A Story Book Christmas’: Entries sought for annual Kiwanis Christmas parade

Community news

Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 — The 2017 Bardstown Kiwanis Club Christmas Parade presented by WBRT Radio is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 7th.

This year’s theme is “A Story Book Christmas” and will proceed along the same route as previous years.

The Christmas Parade will begin at the corner of 5th and Broadway then proceed down Broadway before turning on Third Street and proceeding to the Court Square.

This year’s theme leads to the selection of children’s book author Leigh Anne Florence. Florence visits many of our local schools with her trusty companion Woody to not only entertain the students, but to also find out how beneficial and fun reading can be.

The “Story Book Christmas” theme will be used by some floats in their decoration and will be the focus of entertainment from both the Nelson County Public Library and performing artist Mary Kutter prior to the arrival of the Parade itself. The Library will read a children’s Christmas book and Mary Kutter will sing songs related to this year’s theme. They will perform at each end of the Third Street parade route to give more children a chance to enjoy.

The sponsors of the Parade ask that parents and guardians keep their children from entering the street for candy. Parade entries are allowed to hand candy to children, but not throw candy from any float or moving vehicle.

The Bardstown Kiwanis Club Christmas Parade is community service of the oldest local civic club and also raises funds to support the Kiwanis Club, which distributes more than 300 food baskets each Christmas. WBRT Radio is in its 3rd year of sponsorship and through staffing and underwriting of all expenses for the Parade sees this as its Christmas Present to the local community.

Organizations or businesses wishing to take part in the parade are required to fill out an entry form and return it to either the mailing address on the form or drop it by the WBRT studios, 106 S. Third St. during regular business hours.

The entry form is available in the Sunday edition of the Kentucky Standard and at the studios of WBRT. To obtain a form by email, contact Sylvia Horlander or Roth Stratton at WBRT.
