Obituary: Deacon James Clifford “Lefty” Sturgeon Sr., 84, Louisville

DEACON JAMES CLIFFORD “LEFTY” STURGEON SR.

Deacon James Clifford “Lefty” Sturgeon Sr., 84, of Louisville, died Feb. 18, 2018, after a brief illness. He was born Nov. 24, 1933. He served as a permanent deacon for the St. Pius X and St. Raphael parishes and served as deacon on Mass of the Air for 14 years. He was also owner of Jim Sturgeon Insurance Agency Inc. Many will remember him for his coaching at St. Barnabas Church during the late 1960s and 70s.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Frances; three sisters, Rita, Imelda and Rosalie; and two brothers, Thomas Sturgeon and Roy Sturgeon.

He is survived by his wife of 65+ years, Alma Kuhn Sturgeon; three daughters, Debbie Sharp (Teddy), Janine Chancellor (Debbie Condreva), and Patti Vance (Jeff); three sons, James Sturgeon Jr. (Sharon), Kerry (Amanda) Sturgeon, and Mark Sturgeon; two sisters, Estelle and Barbara Ann; one brother, John Sturgeon; six grandchildren, Alex Vance (Kara), Adam Vance (Amanda Kay), Amanda Vance (Andrew Blum), Andrew Sturgeon (Brandy Duncan), Amelia Sturgeon and John Sturgeon; and one great-granddaughter, Sophia Hicks.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2018, at St. John Paul II Catholic Church with burial following in Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2018, at Ratterman’s Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, Louisville, and 9-11 a.m. Friday at the church.

Memorial donations may be made to Mass of the Air.

The Ratterman Funeral Home in Louisville is in charge of arrangements.
