Friday, May 11, 2018 — The Poplar Flat Cemetery at Woodlawn, near Bardstown, will hold its annual Memorial Day Service 2 p.m. Sunday, May 20, 2018, at the cemetery located at the end of Poplar Flat Cemetery Road.

In the event of inclement weather, the observance will take place at the Woodlawn/Beech Fork United Methodist Church, 4110 Woodlawn Road, Bardstown.

The Poplar Flat Cemetery is one of the oldest in Nelson County. Joseph Ferguson, founder of what is now known as the Woodlawn/Beech Fork United Methodist Church, moved to Nelson County from Virginia in 1784 and made his home in “Popular Flat.”

The first meeting house, known as Ferguson’s Chapel, was erected at what is now the site of the Poplar Flat Cemetery in 1792. Ferguson died Nov. 28, 1828, and is buried in the Poplar Flat Cemetery. The cemetery also contains graves of several other early pioneers, and of at least two Revolutionary War Patriots, Philip Daniel Crume and Capt. Thomas Lewis.

Donations for the upkeep of the cemetery are appreciated and should be sent to Poplar Flat
Cemetery Fund, c/o 119 Mockingbird Lane, Bardstown, KY 40004.
