Friday, June 8, 2018 — Nelson County Schools employees will not see pay raises in the next fiscal year. That’s the word from Tim Hockensmith, the district’s chief operating officer during Thursday night’s working session of the Nelson County Board of Education.

Tim Hockensmith, the county school district’s chief operating officer, reviews the salary book with the board at its working session Tuesday night.

The board reviewed the 2018-19 salary book, which takes on a new look and feel, and shares a similar layout and design as the district’s other documents created under new Superintendent Wes Bradley, Hockensmith explained.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS. The board also reviewed a list of proposed changes to the district’s job descriptions sought by Superintendent Wes Bradley. He also seeks the deletion of a number of job descriptions he said were now obsolete in the wake of his reorganization of Central Office.

Last month, the board approved transfers of 23 individuals to new jobs in the district. Some of those transferred were moved from their Central Office leadership positions to teaching positions around the district.

The board’s action included moving:

– AnnMarie Williams, the former director of elementary education at Central Office, to a teaching position at Bloomfield Elementary School;

– Kimberly Brown, the former director of secondary education, was moved to a teaching position at Old Kentucky Home Middle School;

– Robbie Leathers, the former director of pupil personnel, was moved to a special education teacher position at Thomas Nelson High School; and

– Cheryl Pile, the former director of state and federal funds, was moved to a position as teacher at Foster Heights Elementary School.

In addition to the transfers, the board last month approved the non-renewal of the employment contracts of 54 district employees. That number includes 23 teachers, 15 instructional assistants, nine special education teachers, two Family Resource Center coordinators and the district’s former communication director.

Tyler Wimsett, the county’s director of recreation, talks to the board of education about a partnership between the school district and the county’s recreation program.

Some of those jobs that were cut reflect the drop in enrollment at several of the district’s schools. The district’s employment website lists some of the jobs that are open for the next school year.

LITTLE LEAGUE BASKETBALL PARTNERSHIP. Tyler Wimsett, the director of the county’s recreation department, presented the board with a plan that would eventually put Wimsett in control of Little League Basketball in the county schools.

Under the plan, Wimsett will manage the program and game schedule. The games would still be played at school facilities. The goal is to provide continuity of the sports program in the event Nelson County High School athletic director, Bill Broaddus, retires.

The board expressed its gratitude to Wimsett for the proposed partnership. The board will vote on the plan at its next meeting.

POLICIES, PROCEDURES. The board reviewed the anticipated changes to the district’s policy and procedure manual, as well as updates to the proposed 2018-19 student handbook. The changes will need approval by the board at its next regular meeting

CLOSED SESSIONS. The board also conducted two closed sessions — one regarding proposed litigation, the second related to possible removal of a district employee.

The board announced it took no action when it returned to the public portion of its meeting and adjourned.

NEXT UP. The Nelson County Board of Education will next meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018, in the board meeting room at Central Office on Wildcat Lane.
