Obituary: Larry Hicks, 62, Bardstown

Larry Hicks, 62, of Bardstown, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, at his residence. He was CEO and President of Salt River Electric and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He received a graduate degree in accounting from the University of Louisville, and graduated with a Masters in Business Administration from the University of Louisville.

He was the 2003 Bardstown Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year; he was a founder of the Nelson County Community Clinic and NELCO Bardstown; he was a professor at Elizabethtown Community College and St. Catharine College and a member of several boards including the Flaget Foundation; the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth; the Bardstown Industrial Development Corp.; Town and Country Bank; St. Catharine College; Nelson County Economic Development Agency; East Kentucky Power Cooperative; Rural Cooperative Credit; Kentucky Association of Electric Cooperatives; Bethlehem High School; and Springfield/Washington County Economic Development Authority. While serving on these boards, Larry was instrumental in the development and building of Flaget Hospital in Nelson County and other industrial parks in Washington County. He also served on the committee responsible for the purchase and development of a hydroelectric facility serving the residents of Eastern Kentucky.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Betty Sue Hicks; and two sisters, Sue Ann Harmon and Dottie Mahaffey.

He is survived by his wife, Ellen Hicks of Bardstown; one daughter, Mary Beth Hicks of New York; two sons, Jim (Hannah) Hicks and David (Jessie) Hicks, both of Bardstown; three sisters, Janet Hicks of Bardstown, and Mary Helen Bidwell and Jane Hicks, both of Louisville; three brothers, Len Hicks of Louisville, and Dan (Julie) Hicks and Michael (Tammy) Hicks, both of Bardstown;
two grandchildren, Gracie Hicks and Carson Hicks, both of Bardstown; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in the church cemetery at a later date with the Most Reverend Bill Medley, bishop of the Diocese of Owensboro, officiating.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, and 9-10:15 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2018, at Barlow Funeral Home in Bardstown.

Memorial contributions may go to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and Research House.

Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
