Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, 1 p.m. — The victim of Thursday evening’s fatal crash on US31E at the Nelson-Bullitt County line has been identified as a Louisville man.

Charles Couch, of the Fern Creek area of Louisville, died at the scene of the two-vehicle crash that happened about 6:13 p.m. Thursday.

According to a press release from the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, Couch was driving north on Louisville Road in a 2002 Ford Expedition when a southbound vehicle driven by Daniel Johnson of Bardstown lost control of his Ford pickup truck on the icy county line bridge.

As a result of the crash, Couch’s vehicle caught fire. Passers-by helped get Couch from the burning vehicle. He later died at the scene from his injuries. His body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for an autopsy.

Johnson and a male juvenile were treated at the scene and taken to Flaget Memorial Hospital.

The sheriff’s office investigation determined the slick and freezing roadway was the primary cause. There was no indication that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
