Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2018 — As the calendar year comes to a close, the Bardstown City Council met briefly Tuesday to take care of some necessary business prior to the end of the year.

Mayor Dick Heaton points to the plans depicting the proposed changes to the former Newcomb Oil building on East John Rowan Boulevard in its transition to serving as the new home for the Bardstown Fire Department as council members and Fire Chief Billy Mattingly look on.

CITY ATTORNEY. Bardstown attorney Audrey Haydon was sworn-in by Mayor Dick Heaton as the new city attorney. Haydon, whose family was in attendance, said the opportunity to be city attorney represented a way for her to use her skill and experience and serve the community.

Haydon replaces Tim Butler, who stepped down as city attorney effective Nov. 30, 2018.

WBRT, PLG CONTRACTS. While the council did not need to take action, Heaton gave the council an update on contract renewals with WBRT AM/FM and Standard Communications, both of which lease channels on the City of Bardstown cable TV system.

WBRT’s contract has been signed and submitted to continue the radio station’s use of BRTV, cable channel 19.

Heaton said that a there is not yet a signed agreement with Standard Communications regarding PLG’s lease for its use of channel 13, or an agreement regarding its contract for inserting commercials on the city cable TV system.

Heaton said both agreements expire Dec. 31, 2018.

FIRE DEPARTMENT. The council members took time to gather around the blueprints of the proposed changes the Bardstown Fire Department wishes to make in the former Newcomb Oil building on the property the city recently purchased on East John Rowan Boulevard. The building will become the city’s main fire department location once the changes are completed.

The plans the council reviewed include a large training/meeting room; officers for the department leadership; men and women’s shower facilities; workout area; full kitchen and pantry; and two equipment bays that run the width of the building for fire apparatus.

Parts of the building can be used for other city uses, Heaton explained. The large meeting room at the new fire department would accommodate a meeting of all city employees if necessary.

Heaton said the review of the plans will continue, and that estimates of the cost to renovate the building will be sought early next year.

NEXT UP. The city council will next meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2018.
