City school board OKs grant application to renovate, add new sensory room

Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018 — The Bardstown Board of Education approved a grant application for the WHAS Crusade for Children that will — if approved — revamp the Snoezelen Room in the Bardstown Primary School and create a new Snoezelen Room in the Bardstown Early Childhood Education Center.

The board approved a grant application totaling $38,137, part of which ($20,410) will replace worn out equipment in the primary school’s Snoezelen Room. The remaining $14,526 will go to creating a Snoezelen Room at the Early Childhood center. A total of $3,200 is set aside for installation costs.
The Snoezelen Room is a multi-sensory room used by teachers and therapists as a resource for special need students. The primary school’s Snoezelen Room opened in 2013.
BES DELIVERY TARGETS. Brian Courtney, principal of Bardstown Elementary School, reviewed the 2018-19 delivery targets that address the school’s academic and cultural advancement.
Courtney said his role as principal is to drive student achievement with a focus on instruction and culture. He summed up the schools focus with its motto, “Growing Every Student, Every Day.”
He said he believed that creating a school environment that made students want to attend school was critical to student success. Focusing too much on test scores he termed is “malpractice” because the true goal is developing future lifelong learners.

Courtney said his administrative team help support improving teachers and promoting higher student learning. He is working to better align the school’s goals with helping prepare students for moving upward.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY. The board gave initial approval to proceed to CMTA Energy Solutions to move forward with a proposed project to improve energy efficiency in the district’s buildings. the board also approved submitting the BG-1 project application.
In other business, the board:
— approved the Comprehensive District Improvement Plan as presented by Tim Beck, the director of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
— approved the board’s 2019 meeting schedule, which continues the usual schedule of meeting at noon on the third Tuesday each month.
— approved the school district’s 2019-20 school calendar.
