Jail inmate escapes custody, disappears; police out searching Maple Hill area

Thursday, Feb. 21, 2019 — Bardstown Police officers and the Nelson County Sheriff’s deputies are canvasing the area of Maple Hill for an inmate who escaped the custody of a bailiff at about 3:25 p.m. Thursday afternoon.

The inmate was identified as David Wayne Works, 40, a jail inmate who was arraigned in Nelson Circuit Court earlier Thursday. Works apparently got free of his shackles and escaped from the bailiff’s custody at the jail when he was being taken out of the transport vehicle and back into the jail.

Works run from the jail wearing an orange jumpsuit, but had taken off the jumpsuit. He was last seen in a white shirt and unknown color pants. Police are searching both sides of West Stephen Foster around the Center Street area.

Works was indicted Feb. 7, 2019, on charges that he passed two counterfeit $50 bills at the local Kroger store. He also faces charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun, possession of a controlled substance, first-degree (methamphetamine), and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was being held on $50,000 bail, cash only, plus conditions.
