Tuesday, March 12, 2019 — The Bethlehem High School Banshees girls basketball team was honored at Tuesday’s Bardstown City Council meeting by a proclamation by Mayor Dick Heaton declaring Wednesday, March 13, 2019, as “Bethlehem Banshees Day.”

Bethlehem High School Principal Tom Hamilton talks with Mayor Dick Heaton prior to the start of Tuesday’s city council meeting.

The Banshees were given a police escort out of town Tuesday on their way to the Sweet 16 state tournament at Rupp Arena in Lexington.

The Banshees will tip-off against Owensboro Catholic at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Knott County / Scott County game on Friday.

Athletic Director Keith Graham and Principal Tom Hamilton accepted the proclamation on a motion by Betty Hart.

NEW OFFICER. The City of Bardstown’s newest police officer was introduced to the city council and sworn-in by Mayor Dick Heaton at Tuesday night’s council meeting.

Kevin Mumphrey comes brings 21 years of law enforcement to the Bardstown Police Department. He attended the University of Louisville on a football scholarship and played in the 1990 Fiesta Bowl and 1993 Liberty Bowl championship teams. He’s a native of Carrollton and said he’s looking forward to working in a smaller community.

“We’re really excited that he’s bringing all his experience to Bardstown,”Police Chief Kim Kraeszig said.

FIREFIGHTER PROMOTIONS. Heaton also swore-in four firefighters who were being promoted to new ranks.

Mike Hatfield and Justin Brown were promoted to the rank of captain, and Corey Lanham and Brian Taylor were promoted to lieutenant.

SEWER IMPROVEMENT BIDS. The council approved bids from separate companies for two contracts for work that will upgrade and replace the Rowan Creek sewer main.

The first contract was awarded for improvements at the Town Creek sewer plant off Gilkey Run Road. The improvements will enlarge the interior transport sewage pipes to match the size of the line that leads to the sewer plant.

The council approved a bid from Smith Contractors for $1.334 million.

The second contract deals with improvements at the Pottershop sewer pump station. The winning bid of $1.566 million was submitted by Scott & Ritter.

The bids were higher than budgeted, but not enough to delay the project. The city received a $1.6 million federal grant to apply to the sewer project, and it will borrow additional funding from the Kentucky Infrastructure Authority.

Councilman Bill Sheckles talks with Councilwoman Betty Hart prior to the start of Tuesday’s meeting.

The council also approved a $87,6000 bid to perform maintenance on a water treatment plant filter unit.

ANNEXATION CORRECTION. The council approved minor corrections to the the legal description of the 517-acre annexation the city approved back in July 2004.

That annexation included a large tract of land that included areas along the Bluegrass Parkway between Woodlawn Road and the US150 Springfield Road interchange and to the east side of East John Rowan.

City engineer Jessica Filiatreau said the original legal description did not create a “closed” tract that was annexed. The error became apparent by upgrades in mapping technology. The errors needed to be corrected prior to future annexations in the area.

In other business, the council:

— approved the appointment of Summer Arlinghaus to fill the unexpired term of Historic Review Board Chair Mary Keene.

— approved the appointment of Bruce Rogers to fill the unexpired term of Lee Evans on the Historic Review Board.

NEXT UP. The Bardstown City Council next meets at 7 p.m. March 27, 2019.
