Obituary: Joseph Richard Roby, 83, Bardstown

Joseph Richard Roby, 83, of Bardstown, died peacefully surrounded by his family Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at his residence after a short term illness. He was born Feb. 4, 1936, in Nelson County to the late Alvin and Lillian Mackin Roby. He retired from General Electric Co. in 1991 with 35-1/2 years of service and was a member of IUE Union Local 761. He was a devout family man, always putting his family first. He loved his dog and faithful companion, Willa. He was a loyal alumnus of St. Joseph Preparatory School where he graduated in 1953. He was a Kentucky Colonel, a lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge, and was an avid UK Wildcat and NASCAR fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Bobby Roby and Sam Roby; and one grandson, Joseph Richard “Rod” Roby III.

He is survived by four daughters, Joan (Jack) Welch, Jan (Dennis) Tronzo, Bobbi (M.T.) Harned, all of Bardstown, and Jackie (Jeff) Hansford of Jeffersonville, Ind.; two sons, Dick (Clarissa) Roby of Bardstown and Brock Roby of Bloomfield; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

The Mass of Christian Burial is 10 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2019, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with the Rev. Minh Vu officiating.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2019, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with a prayer service Friday evening at the funeral home.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contribution to St. Joseph School or Bethlehem High School.

The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
