Wayne Edward Kappell Sr., 82, of Bardstown, died Thursday, Nov. 13, 2025, at his home. He was born July 20, 1943, in Lebanon Junction to the late George and Dorothy Helen Stopher Kappell.

He worked at Byrd and Son installing vinyl siding for a number of years. He was a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed camping and gardening. He loved more than anything spending time with his family and hosting the annual tradition of cooking chicken soup and cornbread.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Bettie Ratliff and Brenda Kay; two brothers, Jackie Kappel and Charlie Kappell; and one stepdaughter, Kelly Renee Bowman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Susan Kappell; three daughters, Sandra Renee (Gary) Smith of Elizabethtown, Deborah Lynn (Charlie) Mattingly of Cox’s Creek, and Angela Gayle (Doug) Daniels of Boston; one son, Wayne E. “Eddie” (Helen) Kappell Jr., of Cox’s Creek; one stepdaughter, Ashley (Mark) Mudd of Bardstown; one stepson, Robert Lee (Sandy) Bowman of Culvertown; seven sisters, Helen Louise Embry, Linda Price, and Peggy (Isaac) Ferguson, all of Bardstown, Martha (Billy) Coyle of Nelsonville, Sue (Billy) Newton and Janet Dones, both of Boston, and Lillian (Michael) Hutchins of New Haven; one brother, Rickie ( Ann) Kappell of Boston; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
The funeral is 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, at the Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home with Bro. Ray Johnson officiating. Burial is 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, in the Bardstown Cemetery.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2025, at the funeral home. Cremation will follow the service.
The Houghlin-Greenwell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
