Thursday, May 15, 2025 — Most of us don’t spend much time thinking about our area code — until there’s talk of changing it. For those of us in central Kentucky, 502 isn’t just a number, it’s part of who we are.

The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) announced that the 502 area code is projected to run out of phone numbers by late 2027. As a result, they are considering two possible solutions:
GEOGRAPHIC SPLIT. The first solution is to divide the 502 area code boundary into two areas. One area would be assigned a new zip code; the second would keep the 502 area code.
OVERLAY. The second option is to place an overlay over the entire existing 502 area code. An overlay wouldn’t force existing 502 users to change their phone number or area code.
A new area code would be issued to those who receive new phone numbers in the boundaries of the 502 area code.
Let me be very clear: I strongly support the overlay option.
A split would cause confusion, extra costs, and unnecessary headaches for families, schools, emergency services, and businesses. We rely on consistent contact numbers now more than ever, for everything from medical alerts and school systems to job contacts and childcare. A sudden number change would create real consequences.
By implementing the overlay option, you would keep your current number. That means no reprinting business cards, no worrying about whether your loved ones can still reach you, and no need to reprogram every system you rely on.
Bardstown, as well as other Kentucky towns, may be affected by the proposed changes.
To voice your opinion and learn more, the Kentucky Public Service Commission will hold a community meeting 6 p.m. June 2, 2025, in the Fiscal Court meeting room on the second floor of the Old Courthouse.
This meeting will be your opportunity to speak out and ensure the 502 area code stays intact.
I’ve been in ongoing communication with state officials and will continue to advocate for our community and the least disruptive path forward.
