Obituary: James Patrick Roby, 81, Bardstown

James Patrick Roby, 81 of Bardstown, died Monday, May 19, 2025, at his home. He was born April 2, 1944, in Bardstown. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He worked for Owens-Illinois. He was a farmer and a produce farmer for Roby’s Country Gardens.

He was called — Pat, Jim, Jim Pat, J.P. or Patrick — and was known for being quite the character and fondly remembered with many sayings that were repeated often. If you were around Pat you would definitely hear “Good Googly-Moogly, Mildewin’, Rat’s Ass, Negative, Negatory, Negitz, Crawl off Snake, You’re Dumber in the Head than a Hog is in the Ass, Dumb Ass, Drill Sergeant, What If a Man, Could A Man, Is That Right and Sooie!” He had a love for family, farming, Chevrolet Corvettes, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and aggravating people.

He was preceded in death by one son, James Patrick “Jamo” Roby II; his parents, Marvin and Mary Louise Roby; and one brother, Charles Hagan Roby.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Charlotte L. Roby; three children
two daughters, Regina L. Roby (Bill Ryan) and Deanna Roby Ball (Brent); one son, Shane Roby (Carrie); two sisters, Mary Rita Cecil and Margaret Jane Hicks; two brothers, Joe Marvin Roby and Tony Roby (Sharon); two grandsons, Dakota Roby (Hope) and Jayke Ball; four granddaughters, Layla Ball, Adelina Roby, Isla Roby and Everly Roby; two great-granddaughters, Saylor Roby and Paxton Roby; and many close nieces and nephews dear to his heart.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at Barlow Funeral Home with Deacon Scott Turner officiating. Burial is in the St. Thomas Cemetery with military honors by the Marion County Veteran Honor Guard.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2025, and 9-11 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at the funeral home with a 7 p.m. Tuesday prayer service.

Memorial contributions may go to the Wounded Warriors Project, Alzheimer’s Association and St. Jude’s.

Pallbearers will be Dakota Roby, Dick Roby, Joseph Roby, Jayke Ball, Jeff Cecil, and Cameron Veech.

Barlow Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
