Joseph Thurman Metcalfe, 78, Culvertown

Joseph Thurman Metcalfe, 78, of Culvertown, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at his home.

He was born in Nelson County to the late James Willis Ballard Metcalfe and Mary Leona Bryan. He was a Catholic by faith, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Culvertown. He was a retired employee of the Bellsouth Telephone Company after 33 years of service, and a member of the Bellsouth Pioneers.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Betty Jean Humphrey Metcalfe.

Survivors include three sons, Carl Steven “Steve” Metcalfe and his wife Eunice of Eminence, Darrell Vincent Metcalfe and his fiancé Marty of Louisville, and Christopher Stuart ”Chris” Metcalfe and his wife Julie of Bardstown; one daughter, Patricia Thompson and her husband Jeff ofLebanon; two brothers, Kenneth (Janice) Metcalfe and his wife Janice, and Harold Metcalfe and his wife Edna Rose; two sisters, Norma Lou Ball Ballard, and Verna Greenwell and her husband Billy; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Culvertown with the Rev. Troy Overton officiating. Burial is in theFloydsburgCemetery“Duncan Memorial” nearCrestwood,Ky.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday, March 12, 2012, and 8-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 13, 2012, at Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven with a prayer service Monday evening at 6 p.m.

Memorial contributions may go to American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.
