Elusive car thief leads police officers on high-speed chase
Sunday, April 1, 2012, 12:50 a.m. – Three police agencies were involved the unsuccessful pursuit of a car that was stolen from the East Stephen Foster Five Star Food Mart Saturday afternoon about 4:15 p.m. Bloomfield Police Chief Michael Cotton located the vehicle, a red 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, about an hour later on Old Bloomfield Road. When he attempted to stop the stolen car, the driver refused to stop, and a high-speed pursuit began. After dropping someone off near Conley Avenue, the driver drove south on Old Bloomfield Road at speeds topping 75 m.p.h. before turning north onto Wilkerson Road in the direction of Fairfield. Cotton pursued the car as it turned on KY 48, High Grove Road, at Fairfield, but he was forced to end the pursuit when his cruiser’s transmission failed. A passer-by told police the driver of the stolen car ran off it off KY 48 near High Grove before turning around and driving east toward Fairfield. Eyewitnesses said the driver turned onto Lily Pike, KY 623, driving north into Spencer County at a high rate of speed while a KSP trooper and deputy sheriff pursued the vehicle. Officers lost contact with the vehicle and later called off their pursuit.
