Bardstown Police investigating break-in, catalytic converter thefts

Thursday, April 26, 2012, 11 a.m. — The Bardstown Police Department was called to BDM Collision, 1489 Filiatreau Lane, to investigate a break-in into an outbuilding and the theft of catalytic converters from vehicles. Catalytic converters can contain precious metals, including platinum, rhodium and palladium, which can bring thousands of dollars per ounce. Used converters can bring upwards of $600 on the scrap metals market, depending on their precious metals content. The vehicles most targeted for converter thefts are those with plenty of ground clearance, like trucks, 4x4s and SUVs. Replacing a catalytic converter can cost more than $1,000 depending on the vehicle.
