Storms dump heavy rain, hail, high winds in path across the county
Saturday, May 5, 2012, 3 a.m. — Thunderstorms rumbled across Nelson County Friday evening and early Derby Day morning, with scattered reports of torrential rain, lightning strikes, hail and wind damage.
Several trees were downed by the high wind gusts as the storms traversed the county. Trees were reportedly downed in the 300o block of US31E the Louisville Road. Other trees reportedly damaged by winds were on Plum Run Road and in the 500 block of Hwy 1066.
During the storms, the Bardstown Fire Department was called to two locations at the same time — a garage fire in the 1100 block of Lutheran Church Road and an active fire alarm at the Nelson County Area Technical Center (ATC). The garage was a complete loss. Firefighters were on scene for just over an hour. Firefighters found no cause for the alarm at the school.
The Northeast Nelson Fire Department responded about 2:20 Saturday morning to a report of a shed on fire near 1075 Hwy 1066. The shed was a total loss. The fire was called in by a Salt River Electric employee.
