STAFF REPORT

Tuesday, May 8, 2012, 9 p.m. —  Bethlehem High School’s yearbook staff has been awarded the General Excellence in the Class A division in Kentucky High School Journalism Association’s 2011-12 yearbook contest.

General Excellence is a “best in class” award that recognizes outstanding effort and purposeful creativity in publishing a school yearbook.

The yearbook staff took first-place honors in four of the contest’s eight award categories. The yearbook also earned two second-place awards and one third-place award.

The yearbook staff won first-place awards for Cover Design, Overall Yearbook Design, Theme Development, and Best Use of Graphics. The staff received second-place awards in Photography and Overall Coverage, and a third-place award in the Writing Style category.

The Bethlehem yearbook was designed around the theme of a composition notebook. In an interview published in the yearbook, editor Katie Brooks said she and the staff (Jack Manion, Melissa Crepps, Carol-Ann Eckenfels, Kirby Rust, Kelseey Conniff, and Tony Cecil) reviewed past yearbooks prior to deciding on a design. “We wanted a book that would be eye-catching and remembered for years to come,” she said in the yearbook interview.

Of its first-place award for the yearbook’s cover, the judges wrote “Creative concept, current to high school students. Artwork has been uniquely created and displayed. Love the hand drawn elements and the way they are incorporated onto themed notebook.”

Bethlehem teacher Chris King was faculty advisor for the yearbook staff.
