Winter storm closes county school system for Thursday

STAFF REPORT

Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2011, 8 p.m. — The Nelson County School District has canceled school for Thursday, Feb. 9 due to Wednesday’s snowfall. Many county roads — especially untreated roadways — are currently slick and hazardous. Subfreezing temperatures overnight will cause some roadways, bridges and overpasses to ice over.

Schools that follow the county school system calendar — including Bethlehem High School — will also be out for another snow day.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office and Bardstown police are responding to numerous non-injury accidents that are a result of snow-slickened roadways.

The county is under a Winter Weather Advisory until 1 a.m. Thursday. The low temperature Wednesday night is 10, with a predicted high Thursday of 26 degrees. Warmer temperatures are expected by the weekend, with a high of 42 on Saturday and 52 on Sunday.
