Maxine Wheat Keene, 90, Bardstown

Maxine Wheat Keene, 90, of Bardstown, died Sunday, May 27, 2012, after a short illness. For the last few years, she was a resident at Windsor Gardens. She was born in Adair County, but spent part of her childhood in Campbellsville.

She graduated from St. Joseph Nursing School in Lexington and worked as a registered nurse in the operating room at St. Joseph Hospital in Louisville until she married and moved to Bardstown to raise her family. She loved antiquing, playing bridge and entertaining family and friends. She also earned her 1,000 hour pin as a Flaget Hospital volunteer when the hospital was located on Cathedral Manor. She was a long-standing member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

She was preceded in death by her husband, William L. “Billy” Keene; her parents, Lennie Travis and Lillie Wheat, and her sisters, her twin sister Christine Smith and Geneva Carter; and a son-in-law, Jim Goodman.

She is survived by her four children; Les Keene and Mary Keene both of Bardstown, Connie Goodman of Ellenton, Fla., and Christine Summerfield and her husband David Summerfield of Louisville; grandchildren Katherine and John Summerfield, Lani Goodman (Chris) LaRocca, daughter Meryl, Kent Goodmen, son Sam and Clark Goodman; sister Jeanne Mitchell of Campbellsville and many nieces, nephews and friends.

The funeral is 3 p.m. Friday, June 1, 2012, at First Christian Church with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Dr. Rick Loader will be officiating.

Visitation is 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at First Christian Church.
