Mary Elizabeth Downs, 92, Bardstown
Mary Elizabeth Downs, 92, of Bardstown, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at her home. She was born March 31, 1920, in Nelson County. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Melvin Downs; one daughter, Geraldine Allender; her parents, Palmer and Lenora Walker Auberry; one sister, Thelma Wheeler; two brothers, William Auberry and Comas Auberry; and a granddaughter, Melissa Spalding.
Survivors include three sons, Joe Downs of Louisville, David Downs and Melvin Downs Jr., both of Bardstown; 12 daughters, Barbara Jean Metcalfe, Nora Ballard, Cathy Mattingly, Jane Newton, Helen Tucker, Sharon Downs, Denise Downs, Jeanie Ballard and Christine Mattingly, all of Bardstown, Becky Dewitt of Frankfort, Theresa Tidwell of Franklin, Tenn., and Veronica Hill of Springfield; four sisters, Georgie Bradley, Eudora Mattingly, Elsie Smith all of Bardstown and Helen Reid of Louisville; 47 grandchildren, 86 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial is 1 p.m. Monday, July 30, 2012, at St. Thomas Catholic Church with Fr. Joe Batcheldor officiating. Burial is in the church cemetery.
Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, with prayers Sunday evening at the Clark and Houghlin Funeral Home and Cremation Services.
The family requests that memorial contributions be made to March of Dimes.
