Tommy Reed files to run for a sixth term on Bardstown City Council

Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, 11:50 p.m. — Councilman Tommy Reed filed Monday to retain his seat on the Bardstown City Council. Reed, a teacher and businessman, is seeking a sixth term on the council.
In a press release, Reed stated one reason he is running for re-election is an admonition from his father to place “service above self,” which means the talents, treasures and time you receive on Earth are to be given back. Reed said he wants to give back to a community that has done so much for him.
Reed said his top priorities include:
1. Continued economic and industrial investment to bring jobs to the community;
2. Make sure city government gives taxpayers value for their tax dollars;
3. Keep the city’s streets and neighborhoods safe;
4. Continued efforts to partner with Nelson Fiscal Court on major issues.
BIO. Reed is a 1968 graduate of St. Joseph Prep in Bardstown. He attended St. Catharine College in Springfield and graduated from the University of Kentucky with an AB degree in Education with postgraduate studies at Eastern Kentucky University and the University of Louisville.
After graduation from UK, Reed taught in the Bardstown City School system before opening Bardstown Foodland in 1979 in the former Kroger building at the corner of Fourth and Stephen Foster Avenue. After operating Foodland for 25 years, Reed sold the business and property and returned to teaching; he currently teaches science and physics at Bethlehem High School. He remains a partner in the Bardstown Hampton Inn
CIVIC INVOLVEMENT. Reed’s civic involvement includes members in the Bardstown Rotary Club, St. Joseph Church & School (basketball, and football); he has served as a director of the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce,aided Planning & Zoning with 12 years on the Bardstown Board of Adjustments and is now serving a 5th term on the Bardstown City Council.
Reed has served on the Bardstown-Nelson County Recreation Advisory Board for 12 years. He served on Bardstown’s Long Term Planning committee and the city’s sign ordinance review committee. He has previously served on committees for Main Street Bardstown and the Safety Committee. And presently is working to strengthen neighborhoods on the B.A.N.D. Committee. He served as a leader of a Group Study Exchange to France for 28 days and has served on numerous Rotary Scholarship committees. He served on a state committee for implementing EBT for the Cabinet of Health & Family Services.
Tommy Reed is married to Linda Hill Reed and the father of three daughters, (Davisa Fogle, Toni Kilner, and Jana Osborne) and has 10 grandchildren.
OTHERS FILED FOR BARDSTOWN CITY COUNCIL RACE. In addition to Reed, the other candidates who have filed so far include Peter Trzop, Mark Ballard, former councilman John Royalty, and incumbent Bobby Simpson.
The filing deadline is 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2012.
