STAFF REPORT
Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, 12:10 p.m. — The American Cancer Society, in partnership with Flaget Cancer Center, invite members of the community to take part in the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) 7 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, 2012 at Flaget Memorial Hospital.
The American Cancer Society CPS-3 gives community members the unprecedented opportunity to participate in a historic study that has the potential to change the face of cancer for future generations.
WHO CAN JOIN? The study is open to anyone who is 30-65 years of age, has never been diagnosed with cancer (not including basal or squamous cell skin cancer), and is willing to make a long-term commitment to the study, which involves completing periodic follow-up surveys at home.
WHAT’S REQUIRED? Participants must complete an informed consent form; complete a survey packet about lifestyle, behavior and other health-related factors; have your waist measured; and submit a small blood sample.
Participants will be asked to update changes in their information and take part in periodic follow-up surveys.
WHY A STUDY? To better understand the lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors that cause or prevent cancer, the American Cancer Society’s Department of Epidemiology & Surveillance Research is recruiting 300,000 adults across the U.S. and Puerto Rico for a new research study, the Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3).
Men and women who are willing to commit to the study must be between the ages of 30 and 65 and never have been diagnosed with cancer. To enroll, individuals provide a waist measurement, give a small blood sample and complete and complete a baseline and enrollment survey. Over the course of the study, participants will be asked to fill out follow-up surveys every few years for the next 20-30 years.
For more information on CPS-3, visit cps3kentucky.org. Walk-ins are accepted. Enrollment is taking place across Central Kentucky through Saturday, Aug. 10.
