Construction crew breaks natural gas line at Life Care nursing home

STAFF REPORT

Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2012, 6:15 p.m. — Life Care Center of Bardstown was partly evacuated just before 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon after a construction crew broke a natural gas line with a ditching machine. The Bardstown Fire Department declared a Level 1 Hazmat and Nelson County EMS were dispatched to the nursing home facility. By the time fire units were on scene, the construction crew already contacted LG&E about the break. Life Care residents inside the building who were in rooms closest to the broken line were moved to an area on the opposite end of the building and sheltered in place. LG&E arrived on scene and shut off the natural gas and cleared the construction crew to begin digging again. Firefighters used their measuring equipment to confirm air quality in the building was at safe levels. No residents were injured in the incident. Firefighters were on scene for about 30 minutes.
