Bernice Ballard, 71, Holy Cross

Bernice Ballard, 71, of Holy Cross, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at Spring View Hospital in Lebanon. She was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Holy Cross. She was a retired employee of the Marion County Board of Education.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rueben and Anna Belle Medley Smith; three brothers, Juddie Smith, Earl Smith and Louis Kendrick Smith; and one sister, Wilbie Corbett.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, James Ballard; three sons, Scott Ballard and his wife Ruth Ann, John Ballard and his wife Stephanie, all of New Hope, and Neil Ballard and his wife Lara of Mount Washington; one daughter, Karen Nalley and her husband Donnie, both of Loretto; two sisters, Barbara Ann Fogle and her husband Gerald, both of Holy Cross, and Ada Jane Hamilton and her husband Dee Dee of Loretto; two brothers, Aaron Smith of Richmond, Ind., and John Edgar Smith and his wife Grace, both of Bardstown; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, 2012, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Holy Cross, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. R. Joseph Hemmerle will be the celebrant.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19, 2012, at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto with a prayer service at 5 p.m.
