Monks Road man shot by deputy after pointing a gun at officer

Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012, 11:50 p.m. — A Nelson County deputy sheriff who was responding to a neighbor complaint on Monks Road shot a man who pointed a weapon at the officer as he arrived.

The man who was shot was identified as John Hagan, 61. A resident who lived in the 2100 block of Monk’s Road called Nelson County Dispatch and reported a man had been videotaping her home for two months and was pointing at her home with an axe. Two deputies were dispatched to the home at about 2:50 p.m. Thursday. The first deputy on the scene, Deputy Michael Watts, shot Hagan after he allegedly pointed a weapon at the deputy.

Watts radioed for additional officers and EMS, stating the man had been shot. There was confusion over where Watts and the injured man were located. EMS and backup units were initially dispatched to Stumph’s mobile home park. While officers were enroute to the mobile home park, Watts radioed that he was starting CPR on the victim. Watts apparently instructed a bystander to use his police radio to call dispatchers and confirm his location on Monks Road.

Nelson County EMS transported the victim to the Nelsonn County Fairgrounds where EMS was met by a medical helicopter. Hagan was flown to University Hospital. Louisville media reported Thursday evening Hagan was in critical condition.
