Senior Companion Program looking for volunteers in Nelson County

STAFF REPORT

Tuesday, March 2, 2011, 11:58 p.m. — Have you ever taken a neighbor to a grocery store or cleaned the house for someone who was elderly and unable to do these tasks on their own? If you are over age 55 and would like to help out the elderly with similar tasks and receive a little payment, the Senior Companion Program may be right for you.

The Central Kentucky Senior Companion Program (SCP) is a non-profit home health-type organization that helps the elderly with some in-home assistance. The SCP is in need of individuals age 55 and up. Participants will receive $212 per month for helping disabled or elderly for 20 hours per week. That equals $2,544 annually. The money is tax-free and will not interfere with Social Security, SSI, Disability, and cannot affect your rent. The program also reimburses mileage at 35 cents per mile.

There is substantial need for SCP volunteers in Nelson County for those who need a little in-home assistance. As a Senior Companion, you’ll receive the training you’ll need to be succesful; in addition to the stipend, you’ll also receive the satisfaction of helping others.

For more information contact the Central Kentucky Senior Companion Program office in Elizabetown, (270) 737-1057.
