Nelson County shaken Saturday by East Kentucky earthquake

Saturday, Nov. 10, 2012, 3 p.m. — Many Nelson County residents have reported they felt the 4.3 magnitude earthquake that happened just after noon Saturday.

The epicenter of the quake was 11 miles southeast of Hazard, Ky.,  according to the U.S. Geological Survey website. The depth of the quake was 12. 4 miles. The earthquake hit at 12:08 p.m.

Reports about the quake have been received from all over most of Kentucky as well as Virginia, Tennessee and as far south as Atlanta. Reports of the quake were also felt over the souther parts of Indiana, much of Ohio and as far north as Brunswick, N.J.

At the Cox’s Creek offices of the Nelson County Gazette, the house banged and rattle for several seconds while a boom-mounted microphone shook and gyrated.

There have been no reports of damage in Nelson County.
