Storm Ready: NWS conducting weather spotter training tonight
STAFF REPORT
Thursday, March 21, 2013, 12:15 a.m. — The National Weather Service will conduct a SKYWARN weather spotter training session this evening at the Nelson County Public Library.
The free training session is open to the public and begins promptly at 7 p.m. The weather spotter training is part of SKYWARN, a National Weather Service (NWS) program of trained volunteer severe weather spotters that serve as the weather service’s “eyes on the ground.”
Even with the latest radar equipment, meteorologists use reports from trained weather spotters to fine-tune their predictions, particularly for severe weather events. The training gives volunteers the skills to provide vital information to the National Weather Service meteorologists.
