Francis Allan “Dink” Thompson, 60, Bardstown
Francis Allan “Dink” Thompson, 60, of Bardstown, died Tuesday, May 7, 2013, with his family by his side after a courageous eight-month battle with pancreatic and liver cancer.
Known by many as “Dink”, he was born Aug. 17, 1952. He was a 1970 graduate of St. Francis High School in Loretto and attended Spencerian Business College. He was employed as a sales representative for Cox Interior in Campbellsville for 23 years. In November 2008 he purchased 150 Quick Stop, home of Jake’s Fresh Country Sausage, in Botland, with his son-in-law, C.P. Smith. With the store, he found a new passion. He was instrumental in acquiring USDA approval for the sausage, but will be best remembered for his friendly words and great customer service.
He was an avid poker player who often traveled to Las Vegas, Tunica and Biloxi to play in tournaments. Although sick, he got the opportunity to play in his last Seniors Tournament in January. He looked forward to his Wednesday golf games with the guys, loved watching sports of all kinds, whether live or on TV; and finally spending time with family and friends. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Bernard and Catherine Blanford Thompson of Holy Cross; one sister, Doris Johnson; and his mother-in-law, Estelle Wimsett of New Haven on May 7, 2013.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, the former Mary Gail Wimsett; two daughters, Ashley Thompson Smith and her husband, C.P., both of Bardstown, and Tara Thompson Elder and her husband, Matthew, both of Holy Cross; one son, Eric Allan Thompson; four sisters, June Hutchins, Connie Schickel and her husband, Tony, Mary Spalding and her husband, Bert, and Lynne Bowling and her husband, Phil all of Bardstown; one brother, Jim Thompson and his wife, Jean; five granddaughters, Cate Harper Smith, Elizabeth Sloane Smith, Leigh Talbott Smith, Olivia Hayden Elder, and Catherine Hadley Elder; his wife’s family whom he considered his own, Jackie Clark and her husband, Kenny, both of Elizabethtown, Raffo Wimsett and his wife Annette, and Donna Hurst and her husband Tim, all of Bardstown; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive.
The Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Scott Wimsett will be celebrant and the Rev. Bill Hammer will be concelebrant.
Visitation is 1-8 p.m. Friday, May 10, 2013, and 8-9:15 a.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service will be 6 p.m. Friday.
Pallbearers will be his nephews; John Johnson of St. Louis, Nicholas Clark, Braden Hurst, Glenn Thompson, and Frank Hutchins of Louisville, Joe Bowling of Goshen, Raffo Wimsett III of Lexington, John Hutchins, D.J. Wimpsett, and Jody Spalding of Bardstown.
