Threat of rainfall fails to dampen participants’ spirit at Relay for Life
STAFF REPORT
Sunday, May 12, 2013 — Despite threatening, rainy skies most of the day Friday, the rain dissipated in time for a rain-free 7 p.m. opening ceremony for the 2013 Nelson County Relay for Life at the Bardstown High School track.
The damp weather didn’t dampen the enthusiasm or the community spirit that brings groups from across Nelson County to this annual fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.
This year’s Relay opened as in year’s past with a cancer survivor’s lap. With banner held high, the group completed the lap to the applause of all they passed along the way. There were also laps to honor the caregivers who have sacrificed their time to take care of a friend or family member who has had cancer.
Team booths scattered around the track offered a variety of items for sale as part of their team fundraising effort. Several booths offered items geared toward Mother’s Day.
Even when a fine drizzle began to fall later in the evening, walkers for the Relay teams donned ponchos and umbrellas and walked on. The sprinkles didn’t last long, and they certainly didn’t quench participants’ enthusiasm.
