Charles Leo ‘Meat’ Mattingly, 82, New Haven
Charles Leo “Meat” Mattingly, 82, of New Haven, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013.
He was born Oct. 6, 1930, to the late Henry Lee and Mary Emily Tennelly Mattingly in New Haven, where he lived his life.
He was an avid gardener, hunter and fisherman. He was a member of the St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, where he was a past Eucharistic Minister and the head chicken cooker at the St. Catherine Church Picnic. He was a Member of the New Haven Fire Department for 37 years and served as Chief from 1975-1995. He was a member of the New Haven Optimist Club where he served on the board of directors for 20 years and served five terms as president. He was a Member of the Knights of Columbus, New Haven Council, and was the weatherman for the local New Haven cable channel 4. He was a Kentucky Colonel. In 1995 he was inducted into the Nelson County Hall of Fame by the Bardstown-Nelson County Chamber of Commerce. He was a retired United States Army Veteran who served in the Korean War.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean Spalding Mattingly; and two brothers, Paul Mattingly and Brother Mattingly.
He is survived by one daughter, Judy (Michael) Bowling of New Haven; three sons, Larry (Sherran) Mattingly of Loretto, Jamie (Catherine) Mattingly of New Haven, and Joe Mattingly of New Haven; one sister, Geneva Woods of Birmingham, Ala.; one brother, Fred (Linda) Mattingly of New Haven; eight grandchildren, Andrea (Jason) Jones, Brooke (Les) Hurst, Shane Bowling, Maggie (Ryne) Pelle, Charlie (Emily) Mattingly, Sally Mattingly, J.T. Mattingly, and Dillon Mattingly; and six great-grandchildren.
The funeral Mass is 11 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Troy Overton will officiate.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013, and 9-10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 25, 2013, at the Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven. A prayer service is 6 p.m. Friday.
