William Ernest ‘Ernie’ Coomes, 71, Bardstown

William Ernest “Ernie” Coomes, 71, of Bardstown, died Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at his home. He was born March 17, 1942, in Nelson County. He was retired from Medusa and employed with his brother at Val Coomes Service Center. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Nancy Coomes; four sisters, Carolyn Ballard, Tina Ballard, Patricia Wise, and Mary Hagan; and one brother, Elmer Coomes, Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Patricia “Patsy” Mattingly Coomes of Bardstown; one daughter, Suzanne Edelen of Bardstown; two sons, Ernie (Dina) Coomes, Jr. of Mt. Washington and John (Kelly) Coomes of Bardstown; seven grandchildren, Jordan Edelen, Olivia Edelen, Tyler Coomes, Evan Coomes, Holly Coomes, Will Coomes and Andrew Coomes; one brother, Val (Bernice) Coomes of Bardstown; four sisters, Janie (Bill) Murray of Shepherdsville, Vivian Schepker of Bardstown, Durinda (Wolf) Cowen of Louisville and Pam (Bill) Wright of Cox’s Creek; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at the Basilica of St. Joseph Proto-Cathedral with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Bill Hammer will officiate.

Visitation is 2–8 p.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, and 8-9:15 a.m. Saturday, June 1, 2013, at Barlow Funeral Home. A prayer service will be 6 p.m. Friday.

Memorial Contribution may go to St. Joseph Bereavement and the St. Vincent DePaul Mission Store.
