Wednesday, June 12, 2013, 9 p.m. — If you have noticed a sewer-type, sulphur-laden odor around Bardstown lately, you aren’t alone. The Bardstown Fire Department has been dispatched for odor investigations on Tuesday and again on Wednesday about 7:20 p.m.
The source of the odor is a lagoon dredging operation that is currently in progress at the Barton 1792 Distillery. The lagoons are located south of the distillery complex near to the Beech Fork River.
The sewer-like smell was mentioned by several councilmen during Tuesday’s meeting of the Bardstown City Council. Public Works Director Larry Hamilton said he had smelled the odor as well, and noted the cause was likely the ongoing dredging operation at the distillery’s lagoons.
According to the Bardstown Fire Department, the dredging — and the sewer-like odors — will continue until completed in about a week.
