Thursday, June 13, 2013, 11:11 a.m. — Traffic in a one-block area around Court Square was shut down Thursday morning for about an hour after an unknown white, powdery substance spilled on the roadway at 100 W. Stephen Foster Ave.

The Bardstown Fire Department declared a Level 1 Hazmat situation after arriving on scene at about 10:08 a.m. and requested the closure of traffic in a one-block radius around Court Square. An eyewitness told firefighters the substance fell from a truck pulling a trailer loaded with bags of what he believed was fertilizer. Firefighters alerted Emergency Management Director Joe Prewitt of the spill.

A representative from a local ag supply dealer identified the spilled product as a non-hazardous urea-based fertilizer product. Firefighters swept up the material for proper disposal and washed the residual product off the roadway.
