MICHAEL EUGENE ‘MIKE’ GANT

Michael Eugene “Mike” Gant, 67, of Louisville, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, July 10, 2013. He was born Sept. 14, 1945, in Louisville. He was a graduate of Flaget High School and Watterson College and was a Catholic by faith. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Navy who served on the USS Forrestal during the Vietnam Era. He retired from the Courier-Journal after 31 years of service. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Mount Washington. He enjoyed University of Louisville basketball and spending time with his family. He was a loving husband , father and grandfather. He was very helpful and considerate and never lost his sense of humor. He was known as “Pappy” to his grandchildren who were his pride and joy.

He was preceded in death by his father, Eugene Gant.

He is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Annamaria Saccone Gant; his mother, Lucille Stamper Gant; two daughters, Rebecca (Steve) Mattingly of Louisville and Veronica (Ron) Abell of Mount Washington; five grandchildren, Nicholas Mattingly, Lukas Mattingly, Thomas Mattingly, Ethan Abell and Elizabeth Abell; three sisters, Peggy (Wayne) Kendall, Patty Gilbert and Pam Satterly, all of Bardstown; a special aunt, Tootie Bryan; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews. cousins and friends.

The funeral Mass is 1 p.m. Friday, July 12, 2013, at St. Catharine of Alexandria Catholic Church in New Haven with the Rev. Ken Fortener as celebrant with burial in the church cemetery with full military honors.

Visitation is 9-12:30 a.m. Friday at the Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home in New Haven.

Expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the American Cancer Society.

Joseph L. Greenwell Funeral Home, 324 E. Center Street, New Haven, is in charge of arrangements.
