Mattie ‘Mae’ Neely Samuels, 91, formerly of Louisville

Mattie “Mae” Neely Samuels, 91, formerly of Louisville, died Monday, Aug. 5, 2013, in Athens, Georgia. She was born in Clark County, Georgia  on Aug. 21, 1921, to James C. and Susie B. Johnson Neely. She was a retired elementary school teacher. She was a member of NEA, KTRH, JCTR, Hill First Baptist Church in Athens, Ga., the First Virginia Ave. Baptist in Louisville, and Wheat St. Baptist in Atlanta, Ga.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Samuels; one stepdaughter, Charlotte S. Stivers; and one sister, Mable Johnson.

She is survived by one daughter, Maxine H. Heard of Athens, Ga.; one son, the Rev. Dr. Michael N. Harris of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepdaughters, Sandra S. Bradford of Louisville, Evonne Samuels of California and Patricia Grundy of Bardstown; one stepson, Charles R. Samuels of Louisville; two sisters, Freddie (Robert) Bush, Sr., Detroit, and Fannie F. Nesbit of Athens, Ga.; two grandsons, Blake H. Neal and the Rev. Michael C. Harris; and one great-grandchild Michelle A. Harris.

The funeral is 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at First Virginia Ave. Baptist Church, 3601 Virginia Ave. in Louisville with burial in Highland Memory Gardens. The Reverend Charles Duncan will officiate.

Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 9, 2013, at the church.

Houghlin Funeral Home of Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
