Nelson Democrats take a stand against proposed Bluegrass Pipeline project

STAFF REPORT

pipelineaug12Monday, Aug. 12, 2013, 8 p.m. — The Democratic Party of Nelson County has announced the group opposesĀ the Bluegrass Pipeline, the natural gas liquids pipeline proposed by Williams and Bluegrass Pipeline Partners LP.

At the organization’s Executive Committee meeting Monday night, Chairperson Margie Bradford allowed for a vote by the members of the committee who had asked the party to take a stand on the pipeline.

According to a press release, some members of the executive committee expressed their opposition to the pipeline citing a variety of concerns, including the possible environmental impact, the possibility of a leak that could endanger the lives of nearby residents, and that the pipeline “produces nothing good for Kentucky and therefore is no benefit to anyone in its path.

“Party leaders feel that as the political voice for many citizens in Nelson County and surrounding counties that they have an obligation to speak up and take a side,” the press release noted.

As proposed, the pipeline will travel the entire length of Nelson County’s eastern border. The pipeline will carry natural gas liquids (NGLs), which can include a variety of hydrocarbons including methane, propane, ethane, butane, isobutane and pentanes. The pipeline will transport the NGLs to Louisiana, where the hydrocarbons will be separated.

“The proposed pipeline by Williams and Boardwalk has been given tremendous study by many people affected by its presence in our community and the Democratic Party of Nelson County stands opposed to the project in its entirety.”
