Bardstown firefighters respond to Freeman Avenue structure fire

fireshieldTuesday, Aug. 13, 2013, 12:01 a.m. — A home struck by lightning in the 100 block of Freeman Avenue in Woodlawn Springs was damaged by fire Monday evening as storms passed through the county at around 6:30 p.m.

The Bardstown Fire Department responded at 6:31 p.m. Monday to a report of smoke in the attic of the Freeman Avenue residence. The resident called back prior to firefighters’ arrival to confirm there was a fire in the attic/roof area. Smoke was visible from the roof vents of the structure when the first firefighters arrived. Firefighers from the Northeast Nelson Fire District assisted  Bardstown firefighters in fighting the fire.

Firefighters had the fire under control in about 30 minutes. While firefighters prepared to leave the fire scene they discovered a gas leak at an adjacent residence. The gas company responded and shut off the leak.

Firefighters were on scene for more than 3 hours.
