ANNA MARIE DAVIS

She was born in 1908 in New Hope where she lived her early years. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church.

She is remembered for her many selfless sacrifices. Upon the death of her brother John Davis’s young wife Ruth, she gave up her job and moved to John’s house to care for, love and educate John’s four small children, John Edward Davis, Nancianna Dugan, Charles Davis and Patrick Davis, all of whom are now deceased. Marie witnessed all of “her children” grow to adulthood.

She often remarked how the Holy Spirit guided her throughout those years. She joked that at times situations were troublesome, especially when a young woman didn’t know how to make soup! She quickly learned how to be a “mother.”

She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Brady Davis; three sisters, Clara Craven, Mary Stella Boone and Mayme Nalley; two brothers, Joseph Davis and John Davis; and several nieces and nephews.

Survivors include her niece, Marcie Davis Abell of Lebanon; her “grandchildren,” Michele Mason and Amy Whetstine, both of Franklin, Ind., and John Dugan of Bardstown; and many other nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial is 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church, 104 Church Street, New Hope, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Ken Fortener will be the celebrant.

Visitation is 3-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Mattingly Funeral Home, 195 Holy Cross Road, Loretto with a prayer service at 6 p.m. by Deacon Eddie Hutchins.

Mattingly Funeral Home in Loretto is in charge of arrangements.
