DAVID E. GREENWELL

Known affectionately as Pop or Papa, he was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Barnabas Parish where he volunteered endless hours in many different capacities throughout the years. Before he married in 1952 he was a monk at Gethsemani for 15 months. He was a proud World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He retired from Blue Cross-Blue Shield for which he served as Fleet Manager and was assistant secretary to the president. He was a former member of Kiwanis and Rotary Clubs, American Legion, Blue Cross-Blue Shield Retirement Group and was a Kentucky Colonel.

He was a people person who never met a stranger and always had a story to tell. He loved to dance and was often labeled “the life of the party.” He was athletic and enjoyed outdoor activities. He also loved to repair anything or take something apart and reassemble it. However, his greatest love was God and family and that’s how he raised his children. He was the most compassionate, caring, honest and loyal person one would ever meet. He’ll be missed dearly by family and friends.

He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Kathryn Wade Greenwell (2007) and loving son, Charles Kevin Greenwell (1998).

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra K. Elder (David B.); one son, David L. Greenwell (Nancy Smalley); two sisters, Alice Tangney (Ray) of Arcadia, Calif., and Mary Ann West; five grandchildren, David Shane Greenwell, Chris J. Yount (Ashley), Dana Derricott, Vicky Purcell (Michael) and Sgt. AF. Adam Elder (Heather); 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family expresses special thanks to Theresa McKenzie for her caregiving skills.

The funeral is 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013, at Ratterman and Sons Funeral Home, 3800 Bardstown Road, with burial to follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, at the funeral home.
