Updated: Women arrested after car crashes while fleeing police traffic stop

Monday, Sept. 2, 2013, 12:30 a.m. (UPDATED 10:25 a.m.) – Two women were arrested early Monday morning after they were injured Sunday night when the Chevrolet Malibu they were in crashed as the pair fled a police traffic stop on West Brashear at about 10:52 p.m.

generic_accident_crime_sceneKrista Lea Peake, 21, and Amanda Nicole Elmore, 21, were injured in the crash and arrested once they were released from Flaget Memorial Hospital. Peake was charged wanton endangerment, first-degree (police officer); fleeing or evading police, first-degree (motor vehicle); operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol/drugs/etc.; operating on a suspended or revoked license; disregarding stop sign; and criminal mischief, third-degree. Elmore was charged wanton endangerment, first-degree; fleeing or evading police, first-degree (motor vehicle); criminal mischief, third-degree.

Just before 11 p.m. Sunday night, a Bardstown Police officer who attempted to stop the car reported it stopped briefly before it sped off down Brashear to North Fifth Street. The car turned south on North Fifth and turned westbound on West Broadway. Officers reported that the occupants of the vehicle dumped the contents of a plastic bag or bags out of the car as it traveled at a high rate of speed down West Broadway. The car turned west onto Boston Road with several officers in a pursuit that topped speeds of 90 mph.

Near the intersection of Boston Road and Airport Road, the driver lost control of the vehicle. The car knocked down a mailbox as it left the roadway, rolling over and coming to rest on its side.

The women suffered numerous cuts and abrasions in the crash. One woman suffered facial lacerations, glass in her face and eyes, and left knee pain in the crash; the other reported head, chest and shoulder pain. The pair were transported by Nelson County EMS to Flaget Memorial Hospital for treatment of their injuries, and were accompanied by a Bardstown Police officer.

Police searched the West Broadway area for the material thrown from the vehicle but were unable to locate anything. The Chevy Malibu was impounded by police.
