Driver trapped after distillery slop truck overturns on Fairfield Road
Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, 9 a.m. — Fairfield Road, KY 509, remains shut down at this writing after a tanker truck hauling distillery slop ran off the road and overturned, trapping the driver. Officials say the road may be closed for the rest of the day.
Nelson County EMS, police and the Northeast Nelson Fire Department were called out at 5:55 Monday morning for the one vehicle injury accident. The Bardstown Fire Department assisted the Northeast Nelson department at the scene with freeing the truck driver. The driver’s left leg was pinned by the truck’s steering wheel. A leak of distillery slop from the truck’s tank and the spill of slop on the roadway prompted the declaration of a hazmat spill and notification of the spill to state authorities.
The 70-year-old driver was trapped in the truck for about an hour but suffered only minor injuries. He was transported by EMS to Flaget Memorial Hospital.
