NE Nelson, B’town firefighters respond to BG Parkway trailer fire

fireoutlineMonday, Sept. 30, 2013, 2:20 a.m. — The Northeast Nelson Fire Department was called to the Blue Grass Parkway’s 31 mile marker for a semi tractor-trailer fire at about 1 a.m. Monday. The fire was reported by a Northeast Nelson firefighter driving back to Bloomfield after helping fight the earlier house fire on Manton Road. The truck driver separated his tractor from the trailer, which was a flatbed trailer loaded with rubber pipe.

When firefighters arrived the trailer was fully involved in flames. Fire crews were required to use their self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) to approach the burning trailer due to the noxious fumes emitted by the burning pipe. The westbound lanes of the parkway were shut down while firefighters fought the fire. The Bardstown Fire Department was called for mutual aid — manpower and a water tanker — to help fight the fire. Nelson County EMS was called for a firefighter at the scene who suffered a hand cut. He was transported to Flaget Memorial Hospital for treatment. Nelson County Emergency Management Director Joe Prewitt responded to the scene to evaluate cleaning up any hazardous residue left from the burnt pipe.

Firefighters were on the scene for about an hour and 30 minutes.
