Bardstown traffic stop turns into 45-minute multi-agency police chase
Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, 12:12 a.m. — A Friday night traffic stop for a missing headlight and reckless driving turned into a long-distance 45-minute pursuit that ended in a crash south of the Marion County community of Raywick.
About 10:50 p.m., a Bardstown Police officer attempted to stop a dark blue 1994 Ford in the city limits, but the driver of the vehicle did not stop. The officer pursued the vehicle through town, joined by two additional city police officers as the fleeing driver turned south on KY 49. The man drove south on KY 49, crossing over into Marion County and passing through Holy Cross and continuing south on Hwy 527 to St. Francis. The driver was spotted throwing bottles out of the vehicle as he drove.
At St. Francis, the subject turned east onto KY 52, driving on into Loretto and continuing east on KY 52. He continued to follow KY 52 to the point where it rejoined KY 49; at that point the driver turned south toward Lebanon.
A Kentucky State Police trooper joined the chase, and contacted Lebanon Police and the Marion County Sheriff’s Office to try to shut down KY 49 outside Lebanon. Those officers had the roadway blocked at the bypass, but the driver apparently saw the roadblock and diverted on KY 84, St. Mary’s Road, where he continued driving west until reaching Raywick. At Raywick, the subject turned south on Scotts Ridge Road where he crashed shortly thereafter.
The man was arrested at the scene and lodged in the Nelson County Jail. A pitbull dog that was in the vehicle had to be removed by Marion County Animal Control.
