Election Wrap: Sheckles wins Bardstown mayor’s race; Bloomfield, New Haven results

Tuesday, Nov. 2, 2010 11:55 p.m. – Councilman Bill Sheckles won the race for Bardstown mayor in Tuesday’s election – though the win wasn’t apparent as the first election returns arrived at the Nelson County Clerk’s office.
The initial vote tallies put Councilman John Royalty as the top vote-getter in the four-way mayor’s race. Royalty won four of the city’s 12 precincts and tied with Sheckles in one precinct. Sheckles won seven precincts, with the largest winning margin of 71 votes helping him end the night leading Royalty by 162 votes.
Sheckles received 41.03 percent of the vote compared to Royalty (35.88 percent), Steve Munson (15.50 percent) and Steven Wimsatt (7.59 percent).
BARDSTOWN CITY COUNCIL. In the 14-way race for city council, four incumbents will return next year, joined by a newcomer and a returning councilman.
Top vote-getter Tommy Reed (11.53 percent) will be joined by newcomer Joe Buckman, the second-highest vote-getter at 11.09 percent. Incumbents Roland Williams (11.01 percent), Bobby Simpson (10.19 percent) and Francis Lydian (9.22 percent) will greet former councilman Fred Hagan, who lost his re-election bid two years ago but won Tuesday with 9.29 percent of the vote.
BLOOMFIELD MAYOR. Incumbent Bloomfield Mayor Ronnie Bobblett was soundly defeated by councilwoman Rhonda Hagan in Tuesday’s election. Hagan was appointed to fill an open city council seat, and ran for mayor seeking to move the city forward. Hagan received 66.79 percent of the vote compared to Bobblett’s 33.21 percent.
BLOOMFIELD COUNCIL. One incumbent was defeated in the race for Bloomfield City Council Tuesday. The four incumbents who will return to the council — Denny Howard (16.25 percent of votes cast); Mark Mays (14.15 percent); Walter Pozgay (13.69 percent); and Ann Agee (11.81 percent) — will be joined by newcomers Tammy Wimsett (12.57 percent); Bradley Goff (12.19 percent).
Incumbent Henry Cobble failed to earn enough votes to keep his seat on the council; Keith Stenger trailed the other council candidates with 8.5 percent of the votes cast.
NEW HAVEN MAYOR, COMMISSIONERS. Bobby Johnson defeated John Ray Ball, 150 to 126 votes in the race for mayor of New Haven Johnson.
Donald Cecil was the only candidate to file for a seat on the city commission. Current councilman Freddie DeWitt filed as a write-in candidate last month and was elected with 18 write-in votes. Two more members will be appointed to the commission after the new mayor takes office.
